Wild turkeys started to visit around March 4th. There’s a fairly large group of hens with two toms.
Turkeys will eat any grain you put out for them. They also forage for bugs, greens and any wild fruits and nuts that are available.
Wild turkeys can fly, but they generally don’t fly very far. They walk as they search for food and can cover a fair amount of territory. At night they roost up in the trees to keep them safe from predators.
Turkeys nest on the ground. The eggs will hatch within 25 – 31 days. The hen raises the chicks alone, though you may find several hens grouped together.
Fun fact: a group of wild turkeys is called a rafter, though most people just call them a flock.
